What is bitumen or modified bitumen roofing?

Both asphalt and coal tar pitch roofing products are better known today as bitumen and modified bitumen roofs. Produced in the United states since the 70's, the bitumen roofing products are supplied typically as pre-cut sheets of asphalt once treated with APP (attactic polypropylene) to increase the life and the look of the roofing sheets. Today most bitumen is treated with SEBS - (styrene ethylene butadiene styrene) to increase safety, flexibility and longevity of the roof. The asphalt is layered on a sheet of either polyester, fiberglass, or a polyester fiberglass blend, and the sheets are adhered to the roof to protect your home.

How long should a bitumen roofing product last?

Bitumen is one of the most common types of roofing products used today because of the relatively low price. While the price of bitumen is less, the product it self may not last as long as other roofing products. Many asphalt roofing products have a lifespan of 15-20 years. Of course there are other asphalt products, typically with a higher initial investment, that can be expected to last 20-40 years if properly cared for. Roofing can be compared to automobiles, if it is cared for by a professional in regular intervals it will last much longer than if neglected. By far the largest problem with asphalt roofing is inferior installation. This is especially evident when you look at some of the work performed during the last big hail storm.
